Bangladesh are set to kick-start their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup by hosting Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series, beginning in Chattogram on Friday (May 3). The hosts have announced their squad for the first three matches, and some big names like Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman won’t be available for the first few games.
While Shakib has been given time to recover from the eye injury that has kept him away from the game for over a month, Mustafizur, who was playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has been asked to return home and he’s expected to be available for the last two matches.
Among the big names who are available for the home team, Litton Das is someone who’s form is a cause of concern for Bangladesh. The wicketkeeper-batter has failed to register a half-century in his last seven outings in the shortest format, with a top score of 41 against New Zealand that came way back in December 2023.
Pace bowler Mohammad Saifuddin, who featured in Fortune Barishal’s BPL 2024 title-winning campaign, is back. Saifuddin last represented Bangladesh in T20Is in October 2022.
For Zimbabwe, they would be desperate to start a winning streak after failing to make the cut for the global event, scheduled to be held in the Caribbean and the USA in June.
After missing out on qualification for the multi-team event, the Sikandar Raza-led side suffered series defeats against Sri Lanka and Ireland.
Raza was the only player from Zimbabwe who featured in the ongoing IPL 2024. However, he failed to make an impact in the limited chances he got for Punjab Kings.
The last time Bangladesh and Zimbabwe battled in a bilateral T20I series, the latter emerged victorious (2-1).
Bangladesh, who lost 2-1 to Sri Lanka in their previous T20I assignment, would be keen to gather and then sustain momentum ahead of the mega-event.
