Mumbai Indians (MI) are almost out of contention for a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs. However, they would look to spoil Sunrisers Hyderabad’s chances when they host the Pat Cummins-led side in match 55 of the IPL at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 6).
MI, the five-time champions, are currently sitting at the bottom of the points table with just three wins out of their 11 matches in this season. They lost by 24 runs in their previous encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home. Mumbai Indians opted to bowl and their opening bowlers Jasprit Bumrah along with Nuwan Thushara made early inroads, restricting KKR to 57-4 inside the powerplay. It was Manish Pandey, the Impact Sub, who made an immediate impact in the match as he stitched a 83-run partnership with Venkatesh Iyer, who made 70 off 52, to take the visitors to a total of 169.
In reply, MI’s top-order once again failed to get going as they lost three wickets inside the first six overs. Mitchell Starc was the wrecker-in-chief with a match-winning spell of four for 33 in 3.5 overs. Suryakumar Yadav played a lone battle, scoring 56 off 35, but as soon as he lost his wicket to Andre Russell, it was curtains for the hosts as they bundled out for 145 in 18.5 overs.
SRH, on the other hand, are coming to Wankhede after a nail biting win over Rajasthan Royals by a solitary run. After opting to bat at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, SRH put on a mammoth first-innings total of 201/3 thanks to Nitish Reddy’s unbeaten 76 and cameo by Heinrich Klaasen (42* off 19). Travis Head, who was not at his fluent best against RR, played a scratchy knock of 58 off 44 balls.
With the ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar rocked RR by removing Jos Buttler and skipper Sanju Samson in the first over. Both batters went without troubling the scorers. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag then counterattacked and brought Royals back in the contest with a 134-run stand for the third wicket. T Natarajan dismissed Jaiswal in the 14th over while Parag lost his wicket to Pat Cummins in the 16th over.
In the final over, RR needed 13 to win and become the first team to qualify for the playoffs in IPL 2024. The match went down to the wire and on the last ball of the match, with RR needing 2 to win, Powell missed a low full toss from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and was adjudged LBW.
SRH would be eyeing another strong display to move a step closer to the playoffs, while another loss would kill MI’s outside chance of making it to the final four.
